About the course
This course is designed to inspire young people in Tanzania to start keeping bees. It is in Swahili which means it is accessible to everyone. It has theory and practical elements and uses case studies from the SET sponsored beekeeping groups.
There are two formats of the course. One for students which is a purely online course with video, audio, text, discussion boards and quizzes. Secondly there are these lesson plans and a blended element for teachers to use with their students.
All the material is provided free of charge under Creative Commons licence. Students have the option of downloading the material if they wish. Teachers can download the material or ask SET to send them an online link to all the material plus lesson plans.
Module 1 – Introduction to Beekeeping
Beekeeping basics
This lesson is about the history and background of beekeeping including how important beekeeping is for the whole eco-system. It includes Tanzanian information specifically the types of hives found here and covers basic knowledge about the types of bees in a colony and their roles.
Module 2 - Getting Started
Beekeeping Equipment
For this lesson you need to bring into the class actual beekeeping equipment. Students will put it on and try it and touch and feel the equipment. This can also be done in the field if available.

Ignas interest in beekeeping started when he was ten years old (in 2000) when he first learned the skill from his grandfather. His grandfather started farming with honeybees in 1972, and was one of only three beekeepers in the Singida at the time – solely for honey production purposes, because nothing was known about pollination services at that time.
Ignas recalls that he would transport his hives on his bicycle, and sell honey to the community while doing his other chores round. Ignas states he has always wanted to concentrate on honey production rather than doing both honey and pollination services, as he firmly believes in healthy colonies and that the honey humans take off should only be the excess after what the colony needs.
At the age of 21, with approximately 35 hives, Ignas separated his beekeeping business from his uncle’s business and then grew his business to bigger than that of his uncle’s within four years.
