I'll never forget the first pair of hiking boots I bought over 20 years ago.
I bought them in the morning in my regular size and wore them for a few hours in the afternoon to break them in before wearing them on an easy hike the next day.
Within minutes I could feel both my big toes rubbing on the tip of my boots. The pain intensified as the day went on and became unbearable on the way back which was downhill, further smashing my big toes into boots.
When I arrived home and took off my boots, my feet were covered in blood and my toenails had already started to blacken.
But I had spent a lot of money on these hiking boots which were now non-returnable since I'd already worn them. So after giving the blisters a week to heal and convincing myself that I just "need to break them in", I stupidly wore them again, and again.
I stupidly hiked in these boots that gave me blisters and hurt my feet for another six months - not wanting to waste money.
I later learned that "expensive" didn't always mean better and learned a costly lesson about when not to buy hiking boots.
While it took me a while to learn that lesson, I still had a lot to learn when it came to gear - sometimes I overpacked, other times and one time I didn't bring enough and encountered a freak snowstorm with only a light summer jacket for protection. Brrrr.

Growing up in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains I had hiking at my doorstep. I’ve lived in Munich, Germany and hiked in the Alps every weekend for 11 years and now live in Bansko, Bulgaria, steps from the Pirin Mountains. . I've probably done close to a 1000 hikes.
In addition to weekly hikes - yes every week despite running a company, I also do long-distance treks and hike when I travel which has led me to hike in Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Nepal, Jordan, Albania U.S. Kyrgyzstan, Kazakstan, Bulgaria, South Africa, Rwanda, Madagascar and many other destinations.
I don't tell you this to brag, but to show my experience in doing different types of hikes.
Hiking has had a profound impact on my life. I get all my best ideas when hiking, some of which have had incredible impacts on my business and income. I jokingly (but not really) say that hiking is my therapy.
The combination of being in nature, movement, and surrounded by beauty while challenging myself has helped me heal from a divorce and multiple miscarriages, but has also led to my success, and plays a big role in my happiness.
