Description
· In this video, I will guide you from start to finish on how to paint this delightful Robin in watercolour.
I will teach you a variety of techniques from, foundation washes, detailed layers, blending, adding life to the painting· considering form, mixing colours, painting detailed legs and feet, wood and much, much more!
· Robins are such lovely birds to paint, they are not just cute to look at, but they also give us many challenges along the way. For example, how do we create the whiteness of the chest, but still maintain the deep, darker background colours behind those feathers?
Plus, we need to consider the layering of the feathers as well, how does one section overlap another? This is worked out by carefully looking at the contrasting colours, and how these colours are applied in various layers.
Don't worry, I will show you how I do this during the painting process.
The eye is the ‘life’ of the bird, so we need to spend some careful painting time working on this area. We do this using carefully place wet in wet colour washes, adding tiny details to build up the iris, pop in the pupil, and then add that highlight of life!So have a go at this delightful Robin and let's get those brushes wet!
Paul :-)

Paul Hopkinson
Wildlife Watercolour Artist
I started drawing when I was knee-high to a grasshopper, but didn’t pick up my first brush until the age of twelve. I ventured into the Derbyshire countryside with canvases and easels, and that is where it all began.
For many years I have undertaken watercolour, oil, acrylic and graphite commissions and have painted portraits, landscapes and animals.
I now paint as a full time artist and have over 40 years of experience. I love every minute of my work, though the time always seem to go too quickly when I paint.
I live in North Devon and spend many weekends out and about in the local countryside. So when I’m not painting wildlife, I like looking for and watching it in the natural environment.
When I am asked what would be my preferred subject, I would say without a doubt birds and animals. I love trying to get the life within the eyes in my finely detailed, realistic paintings.
My focus these days is on the teaching of my style and techniques and I do this through written PDFs, and teach on YouTube 'Devon Artist - Paul Hopkinson', Udemy, Patreon 'TheDevonArtist'.
I create and edit videos of my painting projects, these are building into a substantial back catalogue which you get complete access to as a member.
I really do feel that I have found my niche, I absolutely love teaching others and love even more to see the progress people make as they work on the projects. My paint brushes are still very rarely dry, I am still painting, but I also spend a lot of time video editing.
Keep those brushes wet,
Paul :-)

Yes ideal for me as a beginning painter
I had great fun painting with you Paul. I'm a absolute beginner in watercolor painting, and you guided so well during the videos, that I am absolutely delighted with the result. Thanks so much, I had great fun :)
I love learning to paint something that doesn’t look like a 5 year old could do it. The one thing I would request in further tutorials from this wonderful painter is that he would stop feeling like he needs to speak at all times. At times he rambles. Clear concise instruction is so much appreciated. That being said, at least he has a nice personality.
Gostei muito! Queiro mais conteudo deste!
Thoroughly enjoyed Paul’s tutorial on the robin. As an absolute beginner I’m very happy with my end result.
Love painting this bird, would be great if there were more videos like this.
Great quality. Every little step and decision is explained. This is a great way to learn from a master.
Very detailed.
