This course is intended to educate individuals about the impact and importance of advocacy effects in the unique role of occupational therapy in mental health settings. The role of occupational therapy in mental health is unique and must be researched further in order to influence stakeholders such as community-based programming and policy makers. Mental health matters and individuals deserve the same rights and access to supports when compared to individuals with physical health conditions.
The course content includes educational materials provided to the members and staff of the Friendship House about the use and importance of Photovoice as a communication modality to achieve patient-driven goals and promote positive social change. Educational material related to the use of Photovoice in mental health and occupational therapy are provided in the resources section of the presentation. Additionally, a detailed list of advocacy events in located in the resources section. This course aims to aid individuals in their learning of current evidence-based research for the role of mental health in occupational therapy and analyze the clubhouse model of mental health. It is vital to stay up to date on the dynamic nature of healthcare and healthcare policy. Build knowledge in current advocacy efforts occurring in Hawaii and around the world.

I am an occupational therapy doctoral student at Drake University in Des Moines, IA. I am passionate about mental health, health and wellbeing, diversity/equity/inclusion, and advocacy within the occupational therapy lens. My project focuses on occupational therapy's role in mental health advocacy in a diverse population at the Friendship House in Kapa'a, Hawaii. Photovoice and other advocacy events are highlighted in this course.
