- Chapter No. 4 : Solid Waste Management
- Chapter No. 5 Plastic Pollution
In this course, an attempt has been made to inculcate awareness regarding environmental pollution such as air, noise, solid waste, plastic waste, and ozone layer depletion. Environmental pollution is one of the most important problems that affect aquatic life, biodiversity, ecosystems, and human health worldwide by contaminating air, water, and soil. This issue cannot be resolved through conventional tools and traditional strategies. Environmental pollution is not a new trend, yet it remains the world’s biggest problem facing humanity and the leading environmental causes of morbidity and mortality. Man’s activities through urbanization, industrialization, mining, and exploration are at the forefront of global environmental pollution. Both developed and developing nations share this burden together, though awareness and strict laws in developed countries have contributed to a larger extent in protecting their environment. Despite the global attention towards pollution, the impact is still being felt due to its severe long-term consequences. This course exhibit the types of pollution- air, noise, solid waste generation, ozone layer depletion, plastic, water, and soil; the causes and effects of pollution; and proffers solutions in combating pollution for a sustainable environment and health. Environmental pollution is the increase and growth of toxic heavy metals in the air, water, and land that reduce the ability of the polluted sites to support life. The rise in human population density and anthropogenic activity has led to the humiliation of the Earth’s surface through misuse of environmental resources and unpleasant disposal of wastes. In addition, the advancements in science and technology, as well as the increase in industry, have led to an increase in the dumping of wastes, ranging from raw sewage to nuclear waste, into the environment, which poses a serious problem for the survival of humankind. The usual methods of waste disposables such as digging holes and dumping wastes, heat incineration, and chemical decay of contaminants were found to be more complex, too costly, and also lack public acceptance.
At the end of this course, the learner will be able to
1. Define various types of pollution like air pollution, noise pollution, solid waste, Ozone layer depletion, and plastic waste.
2. Understanding the desirable properties and causes of pollutants.
3. Apply different methods to control these pollutions.
4. Differentiate between different types of pollutants.
5. Managing remedial measures to control environmental pollution.
