Description
This course provides learners with basic training in translation technology, helping them to acquire basic knowledge about computer-aided translation (CAT), machine translation (MT), concepts and available technology for translation, and hands-on experience of applying computer tools to enhance translation productivity. The role which computer technology plays in translation will be discussed.
Course Aim
This course aims to equip students with basic knowledge and skills in translation technology.

The MOOC courses are created for a research project (Acquisition of translation technology skills through blended learning) which is funded by the Research Matching Grant Scheme (University Grants Committee, Hong Kong government). The videos of MOOCs were recorded by Dr Maggie Zheng, while the research project has been led by Dr Venus Chan, who is the principal investigator. She is an assistant professor at the Department of Humanities, Language and Translation of Hong Kong Metropolitan University, Hong Kong. She is the secretary of the Association of Translation Technology (ATT). Her main research interests are education technologies, applied linguistics and interpreter and translator training. She is also the principal investigator of some internal and external funded research projects, e.g. Faculty Development Grant (University Grants Committee). In addition, she has served as a journal reviewer, academic advisor and external examiner.

This research project is supported by Memsource, which has donated a Team Edition license with 80 Project Manager accounts (i.e. 800 linguist accounts) to the School of Arts and Social Sciences of Hong Kong Metropolitan University. The total valuation of the donated licenses is USD 576,000 for three years (January 2020 – December 2022).
